IBM 9105-22B
The 9105-22B machine type is the IBM Power S1022s, the lower-core two-socket 2U Power 10 system, physically identical to the S1022 but capped at 16 cores.
The 9105-22B is the machine type of the IBM Power S1022s, the small sibling of the S1022. Same 2U chassis, same two sockets, same P10 tier, half the memory ceiling and a hard limit of 16 cores. The lowercase s in the model name is doing a lot of work, and the machine type is the only place the difference is unambiguous.
This machine type exists for workloads that want two sockets and the I/O of a 2U scale-out box without paying for core density they will never activate. It uses entry single-chip modules rather than the dual-chip modules of the S1022, which means better throughput per core at the low end and no route to 40 cores later. If growth past 16 cores is plausible, the 9105-22A is the machine type to buy instead.

Entry single-chip modules only. There is no dual-chip option on this machine type, which is what fixes the 16-core ceiling.
Selected Power 10 models were withdrawn from marketing effective 31 July 2026. Installed systems are unaffected, but sourcing a processor upgrade or an MES expansion now depends on availability for that specific feature code. Confirm current supply before building a plan around adding cores.
How to confirm you have a 9105-22B
From IBM i
DSPSYSVAL QMODEL returns the model portion and DSPSYSVAL QPRCFEAT returns the processor feature code. Those two values identify a 9105-22B build exactly, which is what a vendor needs to quote parts or an upgrade.
From AIX, Linux or VIOS
lsconf reports the machine type and model in the first lines of output. prtconf gives the same plus processor implementation and clock speed.
From the HMC
Managed system properties shows machine type-model and serial together with installed against activated cores. On Power 10 those two core numbers frequently differ because of capacity upgrade on demand.
From the bezel
A 9105-22B and a 9105-22A are visually the same 2U two-socket chassis. Read the suffix on the label, or check the core count in the HMC ... anything above 16 cores cannot be a 22B.
