Power 10
Power 9 vs Power 10
Where Power 10 still makes sense as a Power 9 refresh path, and where Power 11 should replace the conversation.
Power 9 owns the question of whether an older estate can keep running. Power 10 owns the practical refresh middle: enough modernization to improve capacity, security posture, memory bandwidth, and storage options without always stepping to the newest generation.
Power 9 to Power 10 decision filters
| Question | Power 10 signal |
|---|---|
| Is the Power 9 system capacity constrained? | Power 10 can be a strong refresh if IBM i tier and used/refurbished availability make the economics work. |
| Is the issue OS or firmware exposure? | Power 10 may help, but only if the target IBM i release, HMC, VIOS, adapters, and firmware path are verified. |
| Is the workload expected to grow for five or more years? | Compare Power 11 before committing to a larger Power 10 expansion. |
| Is the project mostly maintenance relief? | A clean Power 10 installed-base system can be a bridge, but maintenance terms matter. |
