IBM Power 10 Machine Types

Every IBM Power 10 machine type-model number in one place: 9028-21B, 9105-41B, 9105-22A, 9105-22B, 9105-42A, 9043-MRX and 9080-HEX, with the model each identifies.

IBM identifies a machine by its machine type-model, not by its marketing name. The S1024 is a 9105-42A. Support contracts, parts lookups, firmware levels and service entitlement all key on that number. On Power 10 the MTM matters more than usual, because two pairs in this generation are visually identical and differ only by suffix.

Selected Power 10 models were withdrawn from marketing effective 31 July 2026. That does not affect installed systems but it does affect how an upgrade or expansion is sourced.

The two pairs that get confused

9105-22A against 9105-22B

The S1022 and the S1022s are the same 2U two-socket chassis. The 22A reaches 40 cores and 4 TB on dual-chip modules; the 22B stops at 16 cores and 2 TB on entry single-chip modules. Nothing on the outside of the machine tells you which is which.

9043-MRX against 9043-MRU

The Power 10 E1050 is 9043-MRX. The Power 11 E1150 is 9043-MRU. Same prefix, different generation, non-interchangeable parts. This one bites in parts lookups more than anywhere else in the line.

The 9080 prefix across three generations

Power 9 E980 is 9080-M9S, Power 10 E1080 is 9080-HEX, Power 11 E1180 is 9080-HEU. Reading the prefix alone will put you two generations off.

9028 is unique

The S1012 is the only 9028 in the line. Every other Power 10 scale-out machine is a 9105. If the label reads 9028, no further disambiguation is needed.

The machine type tells you what the chassis is. It does not tell you what is in it. On Power 10, capacity upgrade on demand means installed cores and activated cores routinely differ, so the machine type plus the processor feature plus the activated core count is the minimum needed to describe a real system.
